Most businesses I have come across so far have been very badly organised and structured. This has meant that work took much longer to complete than it needed to and the quality control was much harder to achieve.
Guidelines on how work will be approached are crucial for any service based business, as they help teams enourmously to understand how things are done within a business. Without this common understanding very little will be achieved and much frustration will take place within teams - especially in virtual teams.
For a typical design agency guidelines may encompass things like the typical stages within project completion and how problems will be approached. Things like common project management approaches are also crucial - a company can adopt some version of Prince 2 approach as an example.
Every approach to project scoping, development and completion involve some set of processes and stages which need to be conceptualised, tackled and completed if the project is ever to see the light of day.
