Being a consultant
Being a consultant in today's world is really difficult and is not for everyone. At Flexewebs we treat this issue very seriously.
I often think about people who call themselves consultants, but, in fact, are nowhere near actually having knowledge or the thinking power to even start thinking about being one.
Consulting in today's complex world is usually related to business in some way or another and it strikes me to observe a basic fact that people with no formal business related qualifications often get involved in ... business consulting.
I had the honour and was lucky enough to study an MSc in Business Management at Royal Holloway College where I learnt plenty of aspects of old and modern businesses, including marketing, team work and human resources, administration, governance, business information systems and so on.
Really, in reality what my MSc taught me about was what I don't know, which is a very valuable insight. If one knows what they don't know, then they are able to work on those matters and, hopefully, learn about them.
It is not unusual to find people who are very confident about themselves and who call themselves consultants (for business) and go about 'spreading knowledge', but actually, in reality, not knowing the first thing they are talking about.
Matters like business process analysis, process mapping and business process optimisation are (in some sense) an art in themselves. They take into account many, many aspects of human behaviour, organisational strategy, systems which exist within the business and so on. These are by no means 'light matters' and there is usually no way that they can be assessed within one business overnight!
Why is it that so many times I then come across people who seem to be offering a 'quick silver bullet' to all business needs? What do they actually know? Why do people try to do things that they are not qualified for doing? Are business consultants even aware of the fact that they are offering business advice of some form and if they don't have any formal education in business, how can they possibly be 'ready' for such service? Would you let someone do your gas appliances if they were not CORGI certified?
That is a simple thought from me today.
