I have seen so many cases of business environments where staff are pressured to deliver beyond reason.
You might have heard that working in private sector often puts people under pressure to deliver and perform no matter what the circumstances.
Fine!
However, I have come across many situations where staff within a company are put under such pressure that impossible is expected from them in terms of concrete deliverables.
Why? It usually leads back to management basics not being implemented properly, or not being implemented at all.
Which basics? Simple business processes related to client service and expectation management. Simple things like project leads are not being clearly assigned to projects, leading to responsibility confusions.
This is, in many companies, reality of day-to-day business, where directors expect the staff to be beyond human able to make things happen, almost never assessing the real dangers of that approach to staff, themselves and the business in general.
Why does this happen?
The answer, I believe, is situated largely in the simple fact that most of the modern 'CEOs' lack basic, core, simple and general (business) management skills and understandings.
After completing my MSc in Business Management, the first fact that struck me was that 'I didn't know anything', so I embarked on another 'personal MSc' in which I practically and theoretically looked for answers to some common questions and problems within business and management situations.
Here is a simple and quick note to directors and managers out there: do not expect your employees to be able to deliver what you yourself are not able to deliver. Chances are they will not be able to do it!
There is no point in expecting the same person to be a developer, project manager and carry out day-to-day client services. It becomes messy and gets very muddled up. If you can't do it, chance are, the other people can't do it too.
More on this subject soon!
