A significant change took place today on Google homepage. Does this mean Google will soon be further complexing their billion dollar page?
I noticed today on Google home page that a new feature has been applied to the search options which enables quicker search of other Google services, such as groups and book search.
This option is in a form of a sideways drop down menu, which offers options to search trough Froogle, Books and Groups.
I have personally been anxious to see options like these on Google for a while and am glad to see that they have introduced such a feature.
It is interesting to see which services Google have chosen to make available in this drop down menu.
My gut feeling also tells me that maybe they would have been better off by making these services from a drop down menu simply available in the pre-existing set of service option links.
Perhaps they have not done this due to their concern that they would be breaking the magical number seven rule.
Particularly I am noting down the fact that Google Base is not yet present in those options – perhaps because it is one of the services which has not yet fully matured and is not properly defined as yet.
This all comes around at the same time when Google have decided to close down one of their other services related to Questions and Answers.
This is the first time in my watch over Google that I have seen them close a service, which I think is a good idea as I think that Google Search itself is enough of a knowledge machine already.
This all seems to be implying the fact that Google is trying to consolidate its services and products offers which it is making available to the public.
I think that these are all very good signs of positive action from Google. It will be interesting to see what Google engineers do with their 20% time from now on.
Will it mean that they will have to 'top-up' other people's unfinished projects? Will this have a negative impact on staff morale?
