Google, the world's first global knowledge machine?

Google, the world\'s first global knowledge machine?

With the latest feature in Google Docs & Spreadsheets, Google are exemplifying more of the 'knowledge machine' features, which will be prominent in future of Google applications.

I have already written about the fact that Google is not just a search engine and has not been so for a while now.

I just learned another interesting fact that it is now possible to use special 'knowledge formulas', known as Google Lookups, within Google Spreadsheets which enable quick 'pulling in' of facts about the world.

There is a specific syntax which needs to be applied in Google Spreadsheets which you need to type in in order to, for example, pull in the date of birth of your favourite actor, or, perhaps more usefully, the number of employees currently employed by Google.

Of course, the algorithm does not work fully as you might like it at the moment, but, overall it does some pretty amazing things when I tested it in a sample spreadsheet.

I would personally also like to see such a feature be brought into Documents portion of Google Docs and Spreadsheets, because it would help me more quickly put together some interesting research and presentation papers on day to day basis.

On the down side, the syntax for obtaining these quick facts within Google Spreadsheets is a little complex for day to day use and currently the function is buried deep down in the Docs and Spreadsheets navigational interface.

Perhaps this feature is also going to be extended in order to help researchers pull in most relevant references for their research material more quickly and reliably, with the formatting already taken care of by the formula present in the application?

It is good to see that Google staff are using their brains in order to do some very useful stuff with Docs & Spreadsheets on an ongoing basis (as usual).

Perhaps at one point I will be able to draw up my own wish list of functionality and ideas that I would like to see featured over there also.

It is not unusual for Google to feature these reserved words in their 'knowledge machine'.

Other keywords have been available for a long time now, such as define keyword, movie and the specially nice and often very useful Google human language calculator and currency converter, which are simply there for everyone to use whenever they want to.
